Cindy Bero
Cynthia Bero joined Partners HealthCare in July 1996 as Chief Information Officer of Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI). PCHI is the network of hospitals and more than 6,000 physicians associated with Partners HealthCare who provide patient care throughout Eastern Massachusetts. Cindy’s focus is delivering information technology solutions that enhance the overall effectiveness of this network.
Cindy currently directs an ambulatory electronic medical records (EMR) initiative that achieved 100% physician adoption in 2009, and is now focused on effective physician use and patient involvement in EMRs. To achieve these goals, she works closely with her PCHI colleagues and Board of Trustees to establish incentives for technology use in the network’s pay-for-performance contracts.
In 2004, Cindy was selected by the Partners’ CEO to lead the information technology team of his High Performance Medicine strategy. In 2006, she was selected to oversee the design, development, implementation and support services for the organization’s ambulatory EMR and patient portal software products.
Prior to joining Partners HealthCare, Cindy was Vice President at John Snow, Inc. (JSI), an international public health consulting firm. Cindy led the division that offered information technology consulting, custom software development and software implementation services to community health centers, homeless health agencies and many of JSI’s other grant-funded health care clients. She was also responsible for managing the information systems infrastructure that supported the firm’s Boston headquarters.
Cindy received her Bachelor of Science with honors from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, and her Master in Public Health in Epidemiology from Columbia University in New York, New York.

At Partners HealthCare, we’re constantly looking for ways to use technology to improve the patient experience. Systems like electronic medical records and patient portals make it easier for us to efficiently deliver uniform high-quality care to our patients.
Patient portals are online tools that give patients an opportunity to interact with their physician’s office and access important information from their medical record. No longer do patients have to play “phone tag” with their doctor’s office to get lab results; they can simply go online and get those results for themselves. And for those helping to coordinate care for a child or an elderly parent, a patient portal can link their online account to that family member’s doctor and allow them to better manage their family’s care. We believe that the widespread adoption of patient portals will streamline care for both doctors and their patients, providing a convenient way for patients to better understand and manage their health.

(PCHI) physicians to understand the value of computerizing their medical records and then helping them through that transition. From 2002 through the end of 2009, much of our IT time, energy and focus went into this important activity. But now, with all of our physicians using electronic records in their office practices, what’s left to do?
A lot.
